“Belly dance was always waiting for me, I just had to grow into it.”
What first drew you to belly dance, and how did your journey begin?
Honestly, belly dance has been part of my life since childhood. When I was around 8 or 9 years old, I used to watch my sister dance to Shakira songs, Hips Don’t Lie, Whenever, Wherever, and La Tortura. I was completely mesmerized. I didn’t even know what belly dance was back then, but I remember trying to copy her moving my stomach and doing little shimmies. I didn’t even know the word shimmy at that time; I just felt it in my body.
As I grew older, around 10 or 11, I started watching belly dance tutorials on YouTube. I would practice alone in my room, repeating the same shimmy again and again because that’s all I knew. I had no idea about styles, techniques, or the art behind it, it was just something my body loved doing naturally. It was my childhood love without me even realizing it.

Then in 2024, I finally decided to take it seriously and joined a professional belly dance institute. That’s where everything changed. I learned technique, discipline, and different styles but more than that, it gave me confidence. It helped me believe that what started as a childhood curiosity could actually become my profession.
Today, when I look back, it feels like belly dance was always waiting for me, I just had to grow into it.
Can you describe your training or dance education up to this point?
In 2024, I began my formal training at The Art of Belly Dance under Sanjana Mutreja, and that decision truly shaped my journey as a dancer. Over the past two years, I’ve trained intensively in belly dance techniques, foundation movements, musicality, rhythm patterns, and various styles within the art form.
This training gave me not only technical knowledge, but also confidence, discipline, and a deeper understanding of how to express emotions through movement. I learned how to connect my body with the music, understand different beats, and perform with grace and control.
That phase of training transformed me from someone who loved dance naturally to someone who performs professionally with intention and clarity. Today, I stand as a dancer who is still learning, still growing, but fully rooted in the art of belly dance.
Was there a defining moment when you realized belly dance could be your profession?
Yes, there was. When I started training in 2024, I practiced every single day. I was so excited to learn that I began posting my dance videos regularly on social media, and I started receiving a lot of compliments and love from people. That really motivated me.
But the most defining moment was on my certification day. After watching my performance, my instructor looked at me and asked, “Rishika, are you already a dancer?” That one question completely overwhelmed me. It gave me a new level of confidence and excitement.
From that day on, I became even more serious about dance. I practice daily, I post, I perform, and I stay excited about it every single day. Dance is not just something I do, it’s my life.

How has your Indian cultural background influenced your artistic style?
Growing up in India, I was always surrounded by music, rhythm, expressions, and storytelling. Indian dance forms teach us grace, emotion, and a deep connection with music, and that naturally flows into my belly dance.
Even though belly dance is a global art form, my expressions, hand movements, and the way I feel the music are very Indian. It makes my style softer, more expressive, and more emotional. I believe my cultural background adds depth and soul to my performances.
What does “luxury belly dancer” mean to you, artistically and professionally?
To me, a luxury belly dancer is someone who creates an experience, not just a performance. Artistically, it’s about elegance, precision, and emotional presence. Professionally, it’s about class, consistency, and attention to every detail.
Luxury is when the dance feels effortless, refined, and unforgettable when people don’t just watch, they feel.
How do you create choreography that elevates events with “feminine grace”?
I focus on softness, control, and intention. Every movement is designed to highlight grace, confidence, and elegance rather than just steps. I listen to the energy of the event, the music, and the space, and then create choreography that flows naturally and feels feminine, refined, and effortless.
For me, true femininity is not loud, it’s powerful, subtle, and unforgettable.

Do you blend other dance forms into your belly dance performances?
Yes, I do. I love blending belly dance with elements of Bollywood, classical, and contemporary styles because it adds depth and uniqueness to my performances. At the same time, I stay deeply connected to the Middle Eastern essence of the art.
I especially love performing to live rhythms like Maqsum, Malfuf, and Fallahi, those beats truly bring the dance alive. Blending styles while respecting the roots of belly dance is what makes my performances feel both modern and authentic.
What role does music selection play in your creative process?
Music is always my starting point. Once the music feels right, the choreography flows naturally, and the performance becomes elegant, intentional, and unforgettable.
I choose music based on the energy of the event. For weddings, I love vibrant rhythms with a touch of Bollywood to create celebration and joy. For corporate events, I select something more refined, classy, and powerful to match the elegance of the space.
Every performance is carefully curated because when the music matches the moment, the dance becomes an experience, not just a show.
What has been your most memorable performance to date, and why?
Honestly, it’s very hard to choose just one because every performance becomes memorable in its own way. My biggest joy comes from connecting with the audience, when I see them smiling, cheering, and truly enjoying the moment, that’s when the performance becomes special for me.
My goal is always to elevate the celebration with my energy, charm, and dance, and to make people feel happy and included. When the audience enjoys themselves, I know I’ve done my job well. That’s why every event I perform at becomes a beautiful and unforgettable memory.

Are there specific types of events you most enjoy performing at?
Honestly, I enjoy performing at every kind of event because my happiness comes from seeing people happy. When the audience is smiling, cheering, and enjoying the moment, I feel complete as an artist.
Weddings have a beautiful Bollywood energy full of celebration, joy, and emotion. Corporate events have a classy, powerful vibe, and festivals are vibrant and full of life. Each event has its own energy, and I love adapting my dance to match it.
For me, it’s simple, if the audience is enjoying themselves, so am I.
How do you adapt your performance to different venues and audiences?
Adapting my performance to different venues and audiences comes naturally to me. For weddings, which are such significant and joyful celebrations, I bring high-energy, glamorous Bollywood-style belly dance that elevates the atmosphere and makes every moment feel special.
For corporate events, the approach is more refined and tailored. I focus on polished, elegant performances that align with the professional environment while still engaging the audience.
Understanding the vibe, the audience, and the stage allows me to thoughtfully curate each performance. For a dedicated artist, this sensitivity to context is second nature and ensures every show resonates beautifully.
Have you ever had to improvise during a show? What did that teach you?
Yes, I’ve experienced this a few times, mostly at weddings. Adapting to clients’ requests is usually quite simple, sometimes it involves small improvisations like engaging guests, creating cheerful moments, or incorporating special requests from the bride’s family.
I haven’t had to make major changes because my preparation and experience usually cover most situations. These small adaptations are a natural part of delivering a personalized and memorable performance.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a performing artist?
One of the biggest challenges is performing when you’re not feeling your best. There have been times when I was unwell or low on energy, yet still needed to give my complete presence on stage.
As an artist, the show must go on. I overcome this by staying committed in the moment, relying on my preparation and passion, and delivering every performance with heart, no matter the circumstances.
What advice would you give to dancers trying to turn their craft into a business?
Treat your craft with the same professionalism as any other career. Master your art, but also build your brand, understand your audience, and network with clients and event organizers.
Consistency, reliability, and adaptability are key. Most importantly, stay passionate and authentic because that sincerity is what makes people remember you and want to work with you.
How important has social media been in building your professional brand?
Social media is the main reason I am where I am today. It helped me reach a global audience, including strong support from the Middle East and India.
Consistency played a huge role, I post dance videos daily, regardless of how I feel, and that hard work has paid off. Social media gave me visibility, opportunities, and the ability to turn my passion into a career.

How do you stay inspired and keep your choreography fresh?
Dance is my life, so staying inspired comes naturally. From morning to night, I immerse myself in learning, practicing, and exploring new movements.
Posting new content daily and experimenting with styles keeps my choreography fresh. Seeing my growth motivates me to keep evolving and delivering engaging, professional performances.
Are there any dream collaborations or projects you hope to pursue?
I would absolutely love to perform internationally. While I don’t have a specific artist or company in mind, any opportunity to share my dance on a global stage would be incredible.
What role does dance play in your personal life, beyond performance and work?
Dance is the language of my emotions. It’s how I express joy, sorrow, excitement, and reflection. Dance is not just my art, it’s my soul and my truest form of expression.
What message or experience do you hope audiences take away from your performances?
My goal is for the audience to truly enjoy every moment. I engage them through expressions, movements, and energy, creating an immersive and joyful experience.
I want people to feel connected, excited, and uplifted. When the audience celebrates the moment with me, I know the performance has succeeded.
